| | | Shiny new hoverfly for ID please Not one of the usuals in the garden, I don't think. Medium sized, maybe 8mm?Sadly only one angle, plus the flying-off (at me) shot! A steer would be very welcome, if poss? |

| | | Re: Shiny new hoverfly for ID please Thanks very much Nige! I’d not heard of it. Googling it, it seems to fit beautifully. How nice! And as it says the important markings are the 'horseshoe-shaped' spots at the base of the abdomen, and that it’s distinguished from X. citrofasciatum by broader triangular markings on T2, and dark apices of hind femora, I guess I could go ahead and label it, couldn't I? | | | Re: Shiny new hoverfly for ID please X. citrofasciatum also has a clear wing, apart from some slight darkening of the leading edge. That distinctive black wing mark points to X. pedissequum, as Janet said. |

| | | Re: Shiny new hoverfly for ID please Well thank you very much Janet and Geoff F! I can see it was more complicated than I thought, but I think you're saying I can go ahead and label it. Super! |

| | | Re: Shiny new hoverfly for ID please Hello
Yes this is X. pedissequum -as we currently know it. Unfortunately there are several splits developing. The angle is not helpful to do much more, but X. stacklebergi needs to be borne in mind and also there is a further un-named species I think.
It would be useful to have the data for the recording scheme.
Regards
Roger Morris
