Is this a Tipula maxima?
Just taken this picture while on Isle of Arran. I think it's a Tipula maxima, but what are the red things on its head - eggs? parasites? Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Morning FG, and welcome to WAB!

Yes, that's maxima. The things on the head are mites that are harmless in themselves but may pose a threat if they obstruct spiracles and that.
