| | | Tiny wingless insect, can someone ID? I came across this in amongst some other insects collected from a pitfall trap, at first I thought it might be a bug but the antennae aren't right, it has no wings and it greenish. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Sam |

I think you might possibly have one of the Springtails there. |

It does look a bit springtaily(sp?) but I've never seen a springtail with more than four antennae segments, this one has no spring either |

| | | Re: Tiny wingless insect, can someone ID? Gerel: I considered thrips (I've come across a few recently) but I couldn't find any mention of a brachypterous form, have you heard of these?
JRsbugs: It was very small (hence the bad photo), just over 1mm, I agree it looks very like it belongs with the Cecidomyiidae, I've found this midge from bugguide.net that looks very similar although it's American wingless whatzit - BugGuide.Net
I can't find a British equivilent but I think that's the right place to look... |

| | | Re: Tiny wingless insect, can someone ID? I found another which is about 1mm and wingless, antennae are broken. Read the comments below.. this is a Sciarid. Diptera 5 (July 2010) - BugGuide.Net

| | | Re: Tiny wingless insect, can someone ID? Evening Sam,
My advice... forget it! It's some kind of Nematoceran then being female and lacking wings (through damage, maybe from another pitfall-pal?), there's no reliable way of doing family - let alone genus or species on this in my opinion.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Tiny wingless insect, can someone ID? The sciarid looks incredibly similar, I don't think I'm going to find a better ID than that, according to Wikipedia sciarids are one of the least studied dipteran families.
Thanks again for your help |

| | | Re: Tiny wingless insect, can someone ID? Jason, I'm getting a lot better at identifying insects but every now and again I get something like this that I am completely clueless about, I didn't even know which order this belonged to! If I can get some idea of what I'm looking at it's a great help. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
