| | | Long-winged conehead for ID check please S. Devon. Grass just outside a wood, beside an estuary.
The only ID which seems to fit is Conocephalus discolor female. But I only have this one poor angle shot (even this was a struggle) and the ovipositor is at an angle. So I would appreciate a second opinion from a more knowledgeable person.
I have found that species nearby once before.
And if I may tag on another which has puzzled me.
The only answer which seems to fit is Field Grasshopper (Chorthippus brunneus) but the wings seem a little short. Unless it is a final stage nymph I suppose. |

| | | Re: Long-winged conehead for ID check please The shape of the ovipositor seems too upcurved for Long-winged Conehead. I think it's a macropterous version of Short-winged Coneahead, C. dorsalis, which would fit well with this. Though I've seen quite a few of this species I haven't seen this form though it's well documented.
Agree with Field Grasshopper, though a rather odd individual, but it is adult. |

| | | Re: Long-winged conehead for ID check please Thanks for that. I will have to keep an eye out for a better photo of the Conehead next time I visit that site. But it led me a 'pretty dance' to just get this one. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
