| | | Small hoverfly - Melanostoma millenium ish? I wasn't even going to raise this one from this afternoon, but because it looks a bit like number 1 in Peter D's selection, and because Jason just said Melanostoma about that, and when I searched for those I came across a comment from Janet about black faces in M. millenium... I thought I'd perhaps try after all?! |

I'm not sure how reliable the black face stuff is, but on account of the pale halteres I suggest mellinum like you.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Small hoverfly - Melanostoma millenium ish? The amount of frons dusting is only really applicable to females. But male M. mellinium, like this one, can usually be recognised by the shorter rather dumpy looking abdomen when compared against M. scalare. |

| | | Re: Small hoverfly - Melanostoma millenium ish? Thanks Geoff F! Having researched your mention of 'frons dusting', and come upon a thread, started by Peter D, but picked up by you, Janet, Matt and Jason and taken into areas of mind-boggling complexity (at this hour of the day anyway), I'm going to have to write it all up in yet another fresh page of notes!
