| | | ?Digger Wasp and friend for ID I have just returned from a visit to Minsmere where our attention was drawn to the digger wasps and their burrows by the side of the path.
This first snap shows a wasp at the entrance of an occupied burrow.
The second shows the occupant. This seems to have pincer mouth parts and the colouring across the head does not match pictures of digger wasps which I have been able to unearth. I cannot seem to find this in my books - this is not unusual for me!
The third pic shows both protagonists
Help, please.
Colin
PS Just checking, Jason

| | | Re: ?Digger Wasp and friend for ID This is Philanthus, a predator of honeybees, and a relatively new resident of the UK. Apiarists are quite worried about it! It is sometimes called the bee wolf, for good reasons! |

| | | Re: ?Digger Wasp and friend for ID Thanks very much
The BeeWolf is shown in my book - but as a profile with the face marking just visible.
That is my excuse.
