| | | Can anyone help me id these please? Would be grateful for help with identifying these please. Sorry about the long list.
1. I assume this is a blow/flesh fly. Nearest I could come to it was Eustalomia festiva, but I have no idea if this guess is even near.
2. Nearest I can come to this is a window fly.
3. I saw this one hovering so am guessing hoverfly, but I can't find anything in my book like this.
4. a tiny blurred fly.
5. I can't convince myself that this is a diptera. Very tiny creature
6. Is this a common house fly? M domestica
7. Is this one S carnaria please?
8. I did wonder about frit fly but it doesn't seem to have a distinctive ocellar triangle.
9. And lastly the tiniest fly of the lot. Very pretty The nearest my book gives me is Opomyza germinationis, but I can't see whether the wings are patterned or not.
Many thanks for help |

| | | Re: Can anyone help me id these please? Well I will try to start off the proceedings with a few suggestions.
1. Looks like one of the Sarcophagidae family (Flesh Fly) but it takes a brave expert to put his name to a firm identification of any of them and there are similar looking Tachinids as you suggest.
2. Hoverfly, possibly one of the Pipiza species. But all black hoverflies are a nightmare to fully identify. Any other suggestions?
3. Syritta pipiens.
4. Soldier Fly, probably Chloromyia formosa male.
I'm not going to make any suggestions about the others as I can't really do any better than you with them.
9. I think Opomyza is a bit bigger than that. I did have a similar tiny fly earlier this year but offhand I can't remember the name. I think it started with Chor . . . or something like that. If there are no better suggestions I will search my records later. |

| | | Re: Can anyone help me id these please? Evening Cat,
The first is Sarcophagidae and may be Metopia sp., but I'm seriously lacking experience with these. Any further images of 6? 7 - Sarcophaga carnaria can't be done photographically. The last as Geoff is correctly-thinking is Chloropidae.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Can anyone help me id these please? #1 Sarcophagidae
#2 Syrphidae, I think it has to be Pipizella sp.
#3 Syrphidae, Syritta pipiens female
#4 Stratiomyidae, Chloromyia formosa male
#5 Drosophilidae, Scaptomyza sp.
#6 Tachinidae, Eriothrix rufomaculata
#7 Sarcophagidae... too many similar to say which
#8 Fanniidae I think
#9 Chloropidae

I do have another photo Jason of no 6, but I do not know how much extra help it is.
Can anyone recommend a book on flies for an amateur please? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
