Please Help me identify this strange insect !
My sister found the cat outside with a large flying insect. It was almost 2inches in length with a large sting which must have been 3/4 of an inch long.

It's a Horntail, a kind of sawfly (Uroceras gigas). Harmless, sometimes called a wood wasp. The "horn" is an ovipositor for driling holes in wood to lay its eggs. Seeem to be a lot about at the moment, much to cats' delight!
