| | Strange Gold coloured insect Can anyone please help me to identify these two strange gold coloured insects that I came across whilst on a bug hunt with my macro tackle around my local bit of spare land, that millions of people use for walking there dogs, and I use for my bug hunts.
any help appreciated... e-mail address normski4ash@yahoo.co.uk

| | | Re: Strange Gold coloured insect Welcome normski. They look like a species of aphid to me- not a group I have any experience in to species level. |

Were the aphids moving? They have a post-parasitisation look to them.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Strange Gold coloured insect Don't know if they were moving or not, took 5 shots and moved on.
Looking at all 5 pics, don't think so.
Noticed now that on the stalk of the plant is a clutch of black aphids, don't know if that helps, will upload another photo to show you,
Thanks, Normski |

| | | Re: Strange Gold coloured insect I agree with Jason that they look like they'd been parasitised. |

| | | Re: Strange Gold coloured insect Maybe but they could just be full-up!
What plant were they on? I don't suppose it will make any difference to the diagnosis but might give a hint? |

| | | Re: Strange Gold coloured insect Hi Paul, had another look at all 5 pics, don't think they moved whilst I was there but can't promise, they were on a napweed leaf, been back since to see if any more or anything they might have hatched out to in case they were young of something, but unable to find anything else

| | | Re: Strange Gold coloured insect Found this after much digging around Google and I'm happy they are Aphid Mummies :-
Aphidius adults are small wasps, typically less than 1/8 inch long. The female wasp lays an egg in an aphid. When the egg hatches, the wasp larva feeds inside the aphid. As the larva matures the aphid is killed and becomes slightly puffy or mummified, usually turning tan or golden in color. The adult parasite chews its way out of the mummy leaving a hole. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
