hi all, someone i know has been biten by a fly {quite a nasty looking bite}, several times and has asked me to id it, but alas im stumped. Heres the description {no pic yet} its the size of a blue bottle and has green legs, the wings are visible and look like just a normal fly wings. he explained when he felt it biting he swated with its hand to kill it, but instead it just walked down his arm.
Any help would be great

I'm no expert but to be honest it could be a whole range of species. A photo would be handy

Try doing a Google search for "cleg", "deer fly", "Tabanid" or "Chrysops", these are the usual large UK biters. |

A walking fly (as opposed to flying) with green legs sounds like Hippoboscidae.

after speaking to my friend again, he told me it came off a cockateil he owns, so i suggested flatfly.
hes looked up all suggestions and recons it is a flatfly.
hes managed to catch one for me which i'll get tomorrow, then i'll upload a pic for id.
