| | | Pill Woodlouse question I took these photos of a pill woodlouse today and I have identified it as Common Pill Woodlouse - Armadillidium vulgare.
1.Is this correct?
2. What are the gold markings on it as I can't find any pictures with these markings? Or is it just something it has picked up on its travels?
I have darkened the images to highlight the gold markings. |

From the spade shaped uropods I can see you are in the right area with Armadillidium sp.It is very probably A.vulgare but I can't see enough to key it.Markings like this are pretty usual for this species.
A Key to the Woodlice of Britain and Ireland by Stephen Hopkins, published by the FSC will help you with your studies, and it is best to get to learn some of their structure.

Are there many species of pill woodlouse in Britain? |

There are six Armidillidium plus Eluma purpurascens given in the Family Armadillidiidae in this key,I guess there could be new introductions though.
