Hornet attacks wasp

I was rowing in the garden the other day, as you do; when i noticed a wasps nest in the roof of my house. Aware the noisy rower may cause them to stir (sting me in great numbers) i kept an eye on them. For the record I HATE wasps and about the only thing that would stop me from vacating the vicinity immediately is finishing a row After a few minutes of feeling slightly reassured I wasn't in danger, noticed a huge hornet with yellowish wings 3-4 times the size of a blue bottle fly onto the drainpipe. It then made its way up the window ceil and onto the wall underneath the roofs guttering and there it sat until a wasp leaving the nest flew past. The hornet swooped up and simply carried it off!! I never thought this would be the normal behaviour British hornets although I'm aware of the giant Japanese hornets attacking bee hives. Is this common place or am I seeing things?

Wasps are good food sources for bigger wasps such as hornets. This behaviour is not seen very often so kudos for your observation
