Please can someone i.d. this large insect seen in a London garden on the ivy.
It's eyes are very large leading me to think it is a hover fly, but I can't find an exact match in my insect books,they talk about the veins which I cannot see clearly enough here. A friend said it's a hornet, please help.

It is the hoverfly Volucella zonaria - which does look very much like a hornet in flight. |

It's the... Hornet Hoverfly! I kid you not - Volucella sp., possibly V. inanis - can't be too certain given image size.

Thank you very much to all who identified this for me.
You cannot imagine the time it took me to find out how to make the image smaller! the site kept rejecting my photos, but having achieved a steep learning curve it should be less frustrating for future postings. So, not just a new record for my garden nature notes, but an IT lesson too.Thanks. | | |
