| | | Rose Sawfly? Hello all - found this chap on umbellifers this morning - I think it is Arge ochropus, because Arge pagana, which is very similar, has all-black thorax and legs (or so I read!). Am I correct in coming to this conclusion? |

If it's any help I reckon this is the Rose Sawfly A. pagana photographed recently on Hemlock. As you say, all black thorax and legs - though I stand ready to be corrected!
Regards, Rob

Looks to me like it could be the turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae.
Cheers. Nik.

Regards, Rob | Thanks for your pic, Rob - it shows the all-black thorax and legs I mentioned, so I think you are right with saying yours is A.pagana. :-) |

Cheers. Nik. | Hi Nik - thanks for the input! From what I have researched, A.rosae only has black at the front edge of the thorax and two 'shoulder pads' in black, rather than the complete dorsal surface being black, as in my specimen, so I still think I am correct with Arge ochropus. |

Many apologies; I think you're right, and following further research and comparison I would like to withdraw this assertion. I'll stick me oar out now.
Cheers. Nik.

It's got those black shoulder pads you mentioned and black edges to the wings but is otherwise a very 'orangey' insect.
I've never seen A. ochropus before.
Regards, Rob
