| | My hover-fly emerged today, need ID Well, 9 days after going into the soil to pupate my little friend emerged today into a shiny new hover-fly which I need an ID on!
Here he is 2 days before pupation sucking dry an aphid (I did some filming of him feeding)
And here he is after his transformation:
I have more photos if needed. Also he has been set free now into my garden.
please help with ID! Thank you for looking.

| | | Re: My hover-fly emerged today, need ID Congratulations! You have a boy!
Do the big joined spots on the abdomen reach the side margins? From the back view they don't look to, that would make it Eupeodes latifasciatus.
The side view looks as if they reach the margin, if so it would be Eupeodes corollae. This species has genitalia which reaches the hind margin of sternite 4, it doesn't look to do that from what I can see but it's newly emerged so might yet grow a little in that department.
Check the spots..
At 12mm he's a big boy! Both species are 9 or 10mm tops, but I'm getting big hovers this year too.

The joined spots kind of do touch the side margins but are quite pinched, here is another shot with his legs out the way.
Thank you Posie, why do I feel like I have given birth

| | | Re: My hover-fly emerged today, need ID Thanks, I can see the spots do reach the sides so you have Eupeodes corollae.
