| | | Syrphus ribesii or something else, please? Looking at pictures trying to name this one (and wondering if knitting mightn't be a better hobby) other pics of Syrphus ribesii sseem to show a dark patch on the face above/ between the antennae, and a straighter line behind the eyes... but is it just the angle perhaps? Advice gratefully received! |

It looks like Eupeodes latifasciatus.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Syrphus ribesii or something else, please? Good afternoon, and many thanks, Jason and Janet! I've had a good look now at both Eupeodes latifasciatus and Eupeodes corollae (awed by the fact there's so much out there that looks so very similar to the unwary) and am going to try to learn and inwardly digest and never muddle with Syrphus ribesii ever again. You're very kind. |

| | | Re: Syrphus ribesii or something else, please? S. ribesii and it's close relations are always worth a second look as there are many other interesting hoverflies with a rather similar pattern.
For instance, recently I am seeing Epistrophe grossulariae (a bit more orange) and a Sericomyia silentis (a bit bigger and slightly darker). OK, there are a few other differences when you look closer.
Another Eupeodes to add to the confusion list is E. luniger.
If possible, also try for a side angle shot because from directly overhead it can be difficult to see if the end of those spots/bands really do reach the abdomen edge or stop just short of it. Also, the shape of those bands/spots when they touch the edge can be important.
Arriving at a correct ID from photos can be a challenge; although with some species it is possible - but with care. |

| | | Re: Syrphus ribesii or something else, please? Many thanks ideed Geoff. From the web I have pasted pics of Syrphus ribesii, Sericomyia silentis, Eupeodes corolla, Eupeodes latifasciatus, Eupeodes luniger and Epistrophe grossulariae all together in a single reference document, which ought now to be a great starter for ten next time! (It also shows why a side view, as well, is so helpful!) In the process I noticed, somewhere, Epistrophe [Syrphus] grossulariae, so am wondering why, and am off now to see if I can find out... Thanks again! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
