| | | Re: Water beetle id's 1 - Agabus nebulosus
2 - Ilybius fuliginosus
3 - Ilybius sp - either a very small I.ater or something like I.quadriguttatus - no definite ID - really need lengths to nearest mm.
4 - Hydroporus sp.

| | | Re: Water beetle id's Hi,
the last two photos are to bad by far. I guess Matt is right by suspecting Ilybius for photo 3, but you can't really eliminate genus Agabus, also I think it is not. But the one on photo 4 in my mind is to big for genus Hydroporus. I think it is Agabus and maybe Agabus sturmi, but the speciesname is just speculation.
Regards
Klaas

| | | Re: Water beetle id's I'm really going by the sizes given. We don't have any 5 mm Agabus, A.sturmi is more along the lines of 8 mm. Then again, if you stare at it, you could possibly think A.sturmii, but the pictures are not really good enough to tell. |

| | | Re: Water beetle id's The only Hydroporus going to 5 mm is Suphrodytes dorsalis and it is not this one. All the others are smaller, very seldom up to 4,5 mm. I learned to ignore sizes in forums, because most of all the given sizes are far away from reality. On the other hand the sizes can be right, because the Ilybius are somewhat around 10 mm big. But if you take a close look, no.4 seems to be just half of the size, than the Ilybius, on the other hand the photos is obviously taken from a longer distance, than the Ilybius and the display detail is bigger. Accounting for this the beetle must be more the size of 6 or 7 mm, far to big for Hydroporus.
I do not know all Hydroporus by far, but none of those I know looks a little like the one shown in the photo, but some Agabus. The habitus itself does not show Hydroporus, but more Agabus. I'm sorry, even the photos are bad (I light it up) I still don't think it is Hydroporus.
How ever, I'm not always right and what ever you do, it is hard business with those photos.
Regards
Klaas
