Looks like a soldier beetle - Rhagonycha fulva. We have loads of them up here at the moment, usually they are up to a bit of how's your father.

Hi Nige

Rhagonycha fulva it is,often seen on umbellifers,and nick named the "umbellifer bonking beetle" by some,if you look on Hogweed flowers and the like,you will usually see many er... actually at it.
