Can somebody please comment on an incident from two years ago? It may be relevant to something happening now. Please see
Bees / wasps in roof space
The house is 285 years old. One architrave of one upstairs window was completely destroyed by boring larvae. We heard them munching in the still of the night. They left behind a filigree of tunnels about 5 mm in diameter, filled with detritus. This was strong enough to support the paint for a while but eventually crumbled.
This seemed to be outside the direct experience of the pest control consultant but she did some research and advised us as follows
- The culprit was probably Uroceras gigas, a wood wasp, actually a sawfly.
- She usually lays her eggs in dead or dying timber in wild trees, rarely in houses.
- She is a solitary animal and does not swarm or nest in large communities. We were unlikely to suffer from other conspecifics or repeat attacks.
We would be grateful for support (or otherwise) for this diagnosis in the context of
Bees / wasps in roof space
Many thanks
