this is genus Harpalus, but the photo is to small to say any more for sure. Possibly subgenus Pseudoophonus and therefor Harpalus rufipes or the very similar Harpalus griseus. But it even can be Harpalus rubripes, female (it is a female). Do you have any bigger photos?

sorry for taking a while to get back to you...
this is the only photo...but at least some i.d. is possible...so thanks for that...
...and im in hastings, in east sussex, about a mile from the sea...
