| | | Lost my Hover-fly maggot Hope someone can help
I found a hover-fly maggot the other day in my garden and decided to keep him for a little bit so I could macro film him eating aphids because it was interesting to watch. I kept it in a clear plastic tub with soil up to 4cm and some plant cuttings, also all from the garden.
I provided it with aphids which it happily ate hundreds of (or what seemed like hundreds) and I think it even grew a little bit over the 2 days. Last night I checked it and it was sitting on a plant stalk still eating aphids, but then in the morning it had vanished.
This is its picture, it was about 15mm long last I saw it.
Well I guess it must have found somewhere inside the tub to pupate but is it in the soil or inside a plant stalk or what?
If it pupated how long will it be until it emerges?
Thank you for looking

| | | Re: Lost my Hover-fly maggot Nice job! I guess it went into the soil to pupate, so keeping it moist I think is the best thing to do.
Holding my breath, hoping it hatches! I think it should hatch sometime in late summer, that's when a lot of hoverflies turn up but I really don't know how long it will take.

| | | Re: Lost my Hover-fly maggot Cool, I have taken the plant cuttings out now (after checking them over for a pupa) and have placed a twig and a plant stem in so if or when it comes out it has something to climb up.
I am also acting as the rain every now and again, and I leave the lid off sometimes to get air to the soil.
I shall put a post up if it emerges
