| | hovers and metallic fly? Hi, all from today, near water - this fly has me stumped, grateful for any suggestions, ta.
And these hovers, I'm no expert but have made a stab at them, again, grateful for steer/corrections!
Eupeodes latifasciatus?
Epistrophe diaphana?
Cheilosia illustrata?
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: hovers and metallic fly? I think No. 1 is Argyra leucocephala
No 2 is not a Eupeodes - this is Sericomyia silentis. |

| | | Re: hovers and metallic fly? Great stuff, thanks a lot Matt,
Argyra leucocephala looks spot on, no hairs on scutellum (I got that from a post by mr clemons!)
And S. silentis, of course, with size and those tough femurs, should have spotted that, but still learning..............
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: hovers and metallic fly? Evening Ken,
I'd say you're correct with Epistrophe for 3; looks more likely grossulariae though.
Take care, Jason |

Take care, Jason | Morning Jason,
I agree, reading the description in Stubbs and Falk, the yellow markings being right for grossulariae. Should have taken more care!
Thanks a lot. At least I got close......................
Cheers
Ken

Take care, Jason | Most features would fit, except T5 which should have a black band.
Check the keys again Ken, I have only looked at E. grossulariae final step.
I found a pic which shows this black band near the tail end.. Diptera.info - Discussion Forum: Syrphidae - Epistrophe grossulariae - ID by S. Lebrun

| | | Re: hovers and metallic fly? Epistrophe melanostoma could fit the bill.
