| | | Beetle, bug, hoverfly - mixed bag for ID! Hello
Thought this beetle would be easy to find - looks distinctive
Bug?! have no idea where to start looking
Hoverfly
Bee?
Think this is a 10 spot ladybird - would appreciate confirmation
I know the instar on left but have no idea of the other creature on right
Came across a damaged harlequin - just curious any ideas about it could have got this damage?
Many thanks

| | | Re: Beetle, bug, hoverfly - mixed bag for ID! I'll stick to the two beetles
Yes, a ten-spot ladybird, Adalia decempunctata.
I've not seen quite this sort of damage but elytral malformations are not uncommon in all species of ladybirds: generalyy assumed to be damaged during emergence of the animal while its elytra are still soft - maybe caught on something? |

I think the hoverfly is sphaerophoria scripta.
Cheers

| | | Re: Beetle, bug, hoverfly - mixed bag for ID! First is a bug, Miridae - Deraeocoris ruber
Your 'bug' along with the Harleqin is a sawfly.
The bee looks like Lasioglossum, maybe L. calceatum.
At the risk of being shot down in flames I tend to agree with Ken on Sphaerophoria scripta, the wings look short.

| | | Re: Beetle, bug, hoverfly - mixed bag for ID! I was looking at nymphs and thought that alongside your instar might be a nymph of Heterotoma planicornis.
Judging from the pale legs and if you look more closely at the antennae too there are 2 segments that are hard to see in the white glint of the leaf.

| | | Re: Beetle, bug, hoverfly - mixed bag for ID! Afternoon Jane,
The first is Deraeocoris flavilinea, first recorded in the UK in the 90s I believe. The third is a Sawfly that I imagine you photographed just prior to alighting! Next is a female Sphaerophoria species - alas female, so no-further identifiable. The bee is a Halictid, then the one to the right of the ladybird in the last image is as said by Anzu - Heterotoma planicornis.
Take care, Jason | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
