| | | Anyone know their craneflies? The first one had people almost running from the cafe we were in. I just happened to have my bug box in my pocket (as you do ) and caught it. I then put it in my pocket to have a look at later much to my husbands disgust.
The second one was half the size of the first and it has a leg missing.
The third one I have asked about before and had no replies. It was quite chunky.
I know craneflies are not the easiest to i.d. but has anyone got any ideas? |

| | | Re: Anyone know their craneflies? Evening Tups,
The first is a Ctenophora species. The next looks like my specimen of Tipula fascipennis - but I'd put little confidence behind these such photographically-identified individuals, I've seen how hard they can be microscopially. It's male.
The last is an interesting-looking thing, but can't help there.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Anyone know their craneflies? Thank you again Jason. Number 3 seems to be a tricky one (my photo doesn't help). Hopefully someone may come up with something. |

| | | Re: Anyone know their craneflies? The second one looks like one I had, Tipula vernalis female. Look here. (Just saw your post Jason, I think it's female!)
The first is one of those interesting ones I've never seen, I haven't checked the keys but it looks like Ctenophora pectinicornis

| | | Re: Anyone know their craneflies? Number 3 is a Tipula sp., possibly T. oleracea. The lack of colour may be an effect of lighting, but it is possibly teneral, newly emerged and pale. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
