| | | 1 fly for ID please A rather interesting looking fly, taken in Askham bog Yorkshire last week. Only pic I have, hope it can at least nail the genus.

Could it be one of the Snipe flies? (Rhagionidae)

Tracey | Possibly, but I am not great on flies and wouldn't like to guess! My book covers about 5 snipe fly species. I tired to brighten the picture up a little but the lighting was poor in the first place. I would like to think it is a fen speciality but probably common as muck

I was with Tracey with Rhagionidae, until I had either a second or third glance. The head doesn't look right for that - think it may actually be a Platypezidae - was it running erratically all over the leaf surface, stopping occasionally?
Take care, Jason |

Take care, Jason | Look at the wings, it's Rhagionidae. Another female Chrysopilus cristatus by the looks.
Janet

| | | Re: 1 fly for ID please Janet, flicking between the diptera site photograph and my photograph the wing venation does look like a match (to me anyway). Also (trying to cast my mind back) I am sure it sat still Jason.
Thanks for your replies guys.

I agree with Janet; this is Chrysopilus cristatus.
As one looking at diptera in the Vale of York...admittely to the South, nearer to Pocklington, I can confirm that this is a very common species in damp habitats, at the moment. By no means an expert, though, but it looks right...
