It is one of the Chrysotoxum species, but deciding which one can be tricky. |

No sorry,i dont have any other angles i'm afraid. The pic was taken in London.
Is it a Chrysotoxum festivum perhaps?
Many Thanks.Kev

| | | Re: Help with Hoverfly I.D please It could indeed be C. festivum but most Chrysotoxum species are uncommon, and some are more uncommon than others.
The orange wings, and rather narrow yellow bars which don't reach the abdomen edge do point to either C. festivum or C. vernale.
The latter is very localised in the SW and east to the New Forrest. Hence the location question.
Either way this is one for Roger at the Hovefly Recording Scheme.
He does visit this site occasionally but you could send him the details. He will definitely be interested. http://www.hoverfly.org.uk/portal.php

| | | Re: Help with Hoverfly I.D please It looks good for festivum, to me, though I have not seen vernale, myself. The yellow bars are kinked rather than straight, and the legs look to be significantly yellow/orange on the femora (though you cannot see the bases).
As has been said, the location suits festivum better.
