Large Red & Black wasp like insect - id?

Hi,

I noticed this large (approx 1.5" in length) red & black winged insect in my garden and after some extensive web searches I am still at a loss as to what it is. Can anyone help?

It's one of the Cimbex sawflies, rare, spectacular, and the second one posted within a week. Very spectacular!

Just been having a read on the internet...

Perhaps not unsurprisingly to those of you in the know but I found this Sawfly underneath a massive silver birch in my back garden.

I'm wondering if I had one of those in my garden last summer now - it was so big it scared me, I ran in to get my camera but it had gone. Article I've just read said they have been seen in Yorkshire so it's possible.
