Ok so in the pub the other night me and some mates got into some nostalgia chat about things we saw and did as kids (80's- mostly). It steered into wildlife/animals (which I was happy about) like why don't you see white dog turds anymore or remember when the bluetits used to peck the milk bottle tops off and the like

. Anyways one that my mate brought up brought back floods of memories which was paddling pool beetles. Now paddling pool beetles are just what we all referred to them as because you would always find them in your paddling pool usually the day after it was filled and no matter how many you fished out you would always find more. At the time I just thought they were a type of water beetle that got a bit confused (probably because I once found a pond skater in my paddling pool) but I'm pretty sure not only is this not thier common name but also I don't think they were water beetles at all as they did'nt seem to swim very well. So now that I think about it I'm guessing they are a type of flying beetle (possibly nocturnal) that would end up falling into paddling pools in large numbers. Now I would really like an ID so I could look them up but there was nothing very striking about them apart from they would always be found in paddling pools. They were small and brown, maybe about the size of a 2 spot ladybird but not quite as round. Any ideas?
