| | | 3 Flies for ID Good afternoon!
Today I have 3 flies for ID if anyone can help. All were found on the same bush between a railway line and a road in Norfolk. I have more photos if needed.
Fly 1:
Around 10mm in size with silver face and goldish sheen to the abdomen.
Fly 2:
A rather large robber fly maybe? Around 30mm from nose to the tip of its pointed abdomen. Made a low buzzing sound when it flew and was quite placid.
Fly 3:
I think it was about 10mm but not sure. Purple thorax and red eyes.
Thank you for looking!

| | | Re: 3 Flies for ID #1 looks like a female Rhagionidae, Chrysopilus cristatus
#2 Asilidae, probably Asilidae Neoitamus cyanurus female but there is another which is rare and can't normally be speparated with photos. Check this thread
Last one I don't recognise, a closer view might have helped but the purple sheen might trigger someone's knowledge if they have had it. It appears to be a Cheilosia which are difficult at the best, or another syrphid which would need very good close up shots from several angles to stand a chance.

| | | Re: 3 Flies for ID Afternoon Anz,
How about Chrysogaster species for the last Syrphid? They tend to have a bit of a violet iridescence. Not an ID, just a suggestion!
Take care, Jason |

Interesting how you would back each others 'thoughts'.
I have pics of a female from last year which does have a purplish tinge..
