| | | Re: What made this? I've no idea Adam but I was about to ask the same question
There are eggs inside but when I have seen the containers empty there there have never been any caterpillers or grubs around eating the leaves.
Hope somebody knows.

| | | Re: What made this? I have an update. A posting by Borth 08/08/09 asking the same question and saying they had been told it could have been made by a stretch spider Tetragnath sp.
Charlie B was also researching it and found a description of the egg cases as "mouldy in appearance and resembling bird droppings" which is exactly what they look like.
I looked up a stretch spiders and found they resemble one that I had already photographed very close to where I have found these deposits.
So unless anyone has a better idea I think that might be the solution

| | | Re: What made this? Nope, not Tetragnatha: I had the same idea and it was rubbished by a spider expert. Since then I've taken decent pi ctures of Tetragnatha eggs masses have to agree that I was wrong.
These are nothing like. I'd still love to know what they are though. |

I know...I'll go and get an unhatched one, pop it in a jar and see what emerges.

These are nothing like. I'd still love to know what they are though. | I have just obtained a copy of an old book which suggests this is the eggs of
Tetragnatha striata. I googled Tetragnatha striata eggs and if you click on the 5th option (Natures eyes) the picture shows this egg mass with the spider. |

Looks like you cracked it.
