| | | Flying types for approximate ID, if poss! There seem to be lots of different long, thin, colourful insects about and I'd appreciate a steer please, if anything is possible from only one or two rather shaky pics.
The first one is one I think I saw on the cliff the other day in great numbers - with very bright orangey-yellow abdomens.
The second fly, with the very short antennae, was busy running around on the leaves of a fatshedera (and as a supplementary I'd love to know what are the small, mottled creatures - as per the one nearby!)
And the third is much longer and thinner and could almost have been an ichneumon wasp, but no partic ovipositor in evidence. Any help appreciated! |

| | | Re: Flying types for approximate ID, if poss! I would say your first is a saw fly and the third is a male Ichneumon. |

| | | Re: Flying types for approximate ID, if poss! Afternoon Rhona,
The first is an Athalia sawfly, then the Syrphid Xylota segnis and the last being another Sawfly species ( note the law antennal-segment count - only 9, as opposed to 16+, Tups ).
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Flying types for approximate ID, if poss! Last sawfly looks like another Tenthredopsis - there's been a few on recently and they are very variable.
First one Athalia rosae.

I had to look a couple of times ( or 3!) to rule them out. This one is quite slim as far as the 'regular' Symphytan habitus goes. Don't be down-hearted!! |
