| | | Small black beetles for ID, please Seen on my Rowan today. Strangely, they had all moved to the underside of the leaflets by tonight, still clustered together though.
A type of sapsucker perhaps? |

What's a Sap-sucker? Anyway, these are Shieldbug nymphs, but can't be too sure which.
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: Small black beetles for ID, please Hi Jennie,I'm not strong on bugs but I'd be interested to know if your nymphs turn out to be a variety of Shield bug (many of which suck sap) which has a preference for or habitually colonises Rowan as we have one in the garden as well as plenty out and about. The point is that you're in Dorset and I'm in Scotland and it would be intriguing, given the geographical and meteorological variations, if I can find similar. Mind you I'm going to have to find said bugs first. I feel a Rowan hunt coming on.

| | | Re: Small black beetles for ID, please Jackaroo, I shall keep an eye on these little guys and see what happens, and where they go. The branch they are on is at head height, so it should be easy to keep tabs on them (famous last words!). |

| | | Re: Small black beetles for ID, please All the nymphs had moved to the top of the leaf again this morning, underneath I found what I think are the empty egg-cases they hatched from. Strange looking when seen in close-up.
Also on the same leaf are these eggs, more of the same or something different altogether? |

| | | Re: Small black beetles for ID, please Hi, love those egg cases. I had a quick look at my Rowan today. Didn't expect to find much and was right. Might have something to do with being infested with birds at this time. lol. Good luck with them.
