Unknown insect bit me

Yes, cheeky thing bit me!
It was about 2-3 mm in size, but I felt it bit me on the arm. It was a bright red colour and when I squashed it, it left a red liquid (I think it was blood) on me.
Obviously I had to report this to my boss in case it was a tick, but I have had no syptoms so far apart from a lump from the bit.
Any help would be appreicated as I keep getting ticks off of google.

Was it a jumper, a creeper, a flier or just a casual swat? We used to get flies that bit like fury, and left a blood smear when you got 'em.

I have no idea how it got on me untill it bit me! It did hurt like fury, and has left a pin-prick sized scab on me lol.
I was in a medow with tall grass in it near to a SSSI marsh, which my work is grazing with cows, where I suspect it transferred to me.
My colleague thought it was a red spider mite, but they don't bite people (all the websites I've looked at say so anyway). I have seen no sign of the ring caused by lymes disease so I am not sure if it was a tick, or it may have just be an uninfected one.
