A mean-looking and impressive insect flying over bracken and bramble at Chobham common today. In the upper photo you can see it has quite a knife-like proboscis!
I know the photos are pretty bad but I was wondering if anyone here could confirm my ID for this?
I took quite a few notes as I doubted I'd get enough detail in the photo with the poor light and photographing it in a pot. I can confirm it had a black vertical facial stripe just above the yellowish hairs over the proboscis, not quite extending all the way to the proboscis itself. The line bulges at two points suggesting it's based upon a merged pair of blobs on the face.
I think between the face stripe and tinted wings, this is
Dioctria oelandica?
