| | | [ID] Hoverfly Don't think its possible for an id to species level, will be happy with genus...is this Rhingia.
Not to happy with this individual. I finally got a Dingy Skipper to stay still for a photo, then this little chap came in and scared the Dingy off.

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly Evening Chris,
Try Rhingia campestris - one genus I've never seen!
Take care, Jason |

Don't feel so bad about losing the Skipper shot now.

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly Hi Chris,
Rhingia campestris is correct, the other species has red legs. I saw one ages ago but it took off as quickly as it landed, I'm extremely happy to see these! I got some decent shots last year though in April, I got it again in early September.

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly The legs here appear to be a little rufous too - the (more reliable?) differenciation is the clear black transverse banding on the abdomen. |

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly There are only 2 species of Rhingia, Chris, and the other one (R. rostrata) lacks any black on the abdomen and is quite rare; although it appears to be increasing in numbers. I did find one last year.
R. campestris was very abundant this year where I live and I was regularly seeing 20 or more a day. I often find them in wooded areas and they seem particularly fond of red campion. flowers |

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly Not necessarily more reliable Jason, the leg colour seems to be the most important factor, or more specifically the tibia. Diptera.info - Discussion Forum: Rhingia rostrata?

There where good numbers of other Hovers around in this meadow today. I've not yet got myself a key to these, so i generally don't pay much attention to them. I did have Volucella bombylans (could not get a decent shot of this), which also came crashing in on a Small pearl-bordered fritillary i was taking a photo of.

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly Interesting photo Janet. I see what you mean - why do they have to fold their wings when they land!
I think the importance of the blackish abdomen is a good field-character - certainly more easily-examined in the field than the legs. |

| | | Re: [ID] Hoverfly You must have had some good weather today Chris! It got to 12C here, dull and rainy most of the day but it did clear up with a short visit from the sun late in the day.
I'm not seeing many hovers yet, but when I have seen one it's usually one of the not so common ones.
