Two large wasps (different) scraping wood
Stony Stratford, Bucks.

I see quite a few of this first type (darker markings) and have several photos from different viewpoints. As far as I can recall this is the only time I've seen the second wasp and as things stand this is the only shot I have.

Help with ids appreciated:

The second is the Median Wasp, Dolichovespula media.
