| | | Bronze shield bug?
What a handsome bug is this! Is it a bronze shield bug (Eysarcoris fabricii)? My book says that that's to be found on hedge woundwort and other labiates but mine was on nettle-leaved bellflowers with the nearest labiates more than 10 foot away, so maybe not.
Best

Yes - the Woundwort Shieldbug, the valid latin name is now Eysarcoris venustissimus. Often found on White dead-nettle and Black Horehound, as well as Hedge Woundwort.
Could you send me the record details (date/location) for the recording scheme?
Thanks, Tristan |

| | | Re: Bronze shield bug? Based on my post code my latitude and longitude are:
N51:34:42 ( 51.578288 )
W0:06:52 ( -0.114378 )
The photo was taken 15:24 on 25th May 2011.
Did I get the species wrong then? I thought it was a Bronze shield bug (Eysarcoris fabricii) but you're saying Woundwort Shieldbug (Eysarcoris venustissimus). I've got some Lamium maculatum which is the same genera as white dead-nettle.
I've got Hawthorn Shield bugs (with photos) in the garden as well, if you're interested, and some Common Green shield bugs (no photos, I'm afraid) to boot!
Best wishes,
Paul |

E. fabricii is the old name for the Woundwort Shieldbug, but E. venustissimus is now the valid name and should be used. Bronze shieldbug usually refers to Troilus luridus. The vernacular names of shieldbugs and allied species are something of a mess! |

Hi Tristran,
I think this is a Hawthorn Shield Bug (Acanthosoma haemorrhoidaie) - please correct me if I'm wrong. I took the photo at 12:59 on 12th May 2011 at latitude and longitude:
N51:34:42 ( 51.578288 )
W0:06:52 ( -0.114378 )
I had what I think was a Common Green Shieldbug (Palomena prasina) in the house during the winter. It had come from several frost-tender plants that I'd bought in to overwinter. Sadly, I didn't take a photo. I think this is probably a bit too vague for your records - I'll post a photo if I get another opportunity.
Best wishes,
Paul |

Common Green Shield Bug will winter over, they turn brown for the winter, green for the summer.
