| | | Brown beetle 5mm Hi..
I haven't been able to find anything with this pronotum shape, although the head reminds me of Carabidae.
It was near my pond on 8th May, I only got one decent shot before it disappeared into the grass.
Janet

This is one of those tricky Choleva sp. I find them alot in Vole runs...i've never attempted to take any to species level.
Regards Chris... |

it is difficult to take those to species level and not possible by just one photo. At general you need a sideview, a good total of the habitus of the pronotum, a total of the antennae. Than you need a good photo, maybe two photos of the coxa (downside) of the male beetles (wide forefeet) and the last abdominal segment or call it the inner segment. So there is a dissection needed for the females.
I think this will be Choleva oblonga or C. angustata. Those are the most common species of the six or seven that fit into what I can see in this photo.
Regards
Klaas
Edit: If there is ever any interrest in a exact ID just send them over to me.

| | | Re: Brown beetle 5mm Hi Chris , that looks good but there's very little about these anywhere! I found the only look-alike on Nature Spot, they have two and one, Choleva cf. spadicea looks very near. Maybe I could try it on the Beetles Yahoo group. Choleva cf spadicea

There is Choleva cf. oblonga on the same site I linked to, Choleva (cf) oblonga
If I find a dead one I will think of you.
