| | | Hoverfly ID, help please! I spooted this insect while out walking this morning, I'm normally quite good at identification but I'm stuck with this one! Does anyone know? I'd really appreciate some help...
Thanks,

It is not a hoverfly, as the antennae are too long, with too many segments. Hoverflies mostly have very short antennae, and only with 3 segments.
It looks more like a Sawfly.

I've had another look in my insect book and I think you're right it's a sawfly, Tenthredo arcuata. Thanks for your help! |

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID, help please! Ah ok, Thanks John. I've been having a look around and it seems sawflies are difficult to identify and not well understood, they're fantastic insects though!

| | | Re: Hoverfly ID, help please! Certainly are; they're not mega-difficult to identify, but you usually need a microscope and handbook.
