unidentified golden fly
Could anyone identify this rather handsome creature for me please. Not in my insect book. About half an inch long and resting on a paeony leaf in full sunshine and looking like a piece of jewellery fashioned from ebony and gold!

It's a Hoverfly, a Xylota species.

Fantastic, aren't they!

It is almost certainly Xylota segnis, a common hoverfly of many different wooded habitats. The only confusion would be the far less common X. tarda, but that is smaller. From the size you gave, it will be segnis.
