| | | Ladybird ID Good afternoon!
Found this guy in my garden in Norfolk this morning, is this a 14-spot ladybird?
Thank you.

Rather then spots it appears to have "squares", also some of the "squares" are joined with that black line along the suture. Thought I had best confirm on the forum

| | | Re: Ladybird ID The ones I've seen have always had the 'squares' . Looking on Google Images a lot of the have circles, maybe just the variation in them?

| | | Re: Ladybird ID Yes, Propylea quattuordecimpunctata, does tend to have square spots! It is quite variable, less in number of spots than size of them. It sometimes has distinct, rounder rather than rectangular spots but mostly the spots join and become rectilinear as on the individual photographed here. In North America it is common to see specimens whih are mainly black with small yellow squares so there is clearly some regional variation in pattern. |

| | | Re: Ladybird ID Thank you for your reply Paul, I had a look around at some other 14-spot ladybird pictures and yeah they are really variable! I do quite like the square spots , I also went on the ladybird survey site just to quickly send off my sighting details.

| | | Re: Ladybird ID Hi Anzu,
This species is not only variable in spot shape and size but also in colour. See the differences between the two ladybirds in this pic of a mating pair that I posted to the WAB Gallery earlier this week:

Bruce | Cool photo, I didn't realize that they could be so variable in size and colour, I would like to see a white one like that sometime.
