| | | Beetle I.D. please Hi,
Can anybody help out with this please?
The small black beetle keys out to Pterostichus strenuus in Martin Luffs
Key..... I can't work out the second guy with the metallic green pronotum and metallic brown elytra......and I've literally spent hours at it.....
There is only one setiferous puncture inside/behind the eye and the third antennal segment is glabrous.....where am I going wrong?
Thanks! |

| | | Re: Beetle I.D. please Hi ger...this looks like Agonum, possible A. muelleri? The key to these will be on page 126.
Are you sure with the one setiferous puncture, the other could have snapped off or have not formed properly. Where is the punture situated, is it center, forward or to the rear of the eye.
Regards Chris... |

| | | Re: Beetle I.D. please Thanks for the tip Chris,
The setiferous puncture was to the rear of the eye...and yes there are little empty puncture where the more frontal hairs should have been. Lack of experience! The beetle was very brittle....I think its because I stored it in alcohol (and I saw a thread recently that said alcohol makes the samples brittle)......I guess I will have to look at dry mounting!!!
Really appreciate the help!!

| | | Re: Beetle I.D. please Hi,
the one on top is Agonum muelleri as Fauna suggested. The one on bottom is genus Pterostichus. A species-identification is impossible with this picture, but surching Pterostichus strenuus or one of the similar species should be bringing you to the point.
Regards
Klaas
