any idea of the size of this beetle. The antennae let me think of a Nitidulidae and maybe a beetle of genus Meligethes, but I#m everything but sure.
Regards
Klaas

Klaas | Sorry I think about a small ladybird size I cant remember..Its hard to see properly as the pollen is quite thick not sure what plant it was on but think it was cowslip that must be the leaf it was on.

I think it is Meligethes. Most of what you can see looks like Meligethes. The pitty is that there is a huge number of species that often can only separated by the dissection of the genitalia. I know that the species all need their special plants, but I have no experience about the plants the one or the other species needs and I never found anything in a book. Beside this the beetles spend most of their time in the plants their larvae feed on, but they often even sit in totally different flowers, so you couldn't even say by knowing the plant.
Any idea how it came to the name "cowslip" for Primula? Fun is, that the word "slip" in German means "panty" and I now can't forget the picture of a cow running around in a big white panty hiding its udder, feeling absolutely fashionable. *rofl*
Regards
Klaas

Klaas | Ha ha ha..
I have no idea about plants and their names..
Thank you on the id, at least I can put a name on the pic now.
I know most beetles/insects can only give an accurate id on dissection..
I have just read it is a pest of oilseed rape and this is growing next to the cowslip the flowers have just dropped off the rapeseed I dont know how the rapeseed got there but its under the bird table.
So looks like the beetle was on there at some time.

I guess you read about Meligethes aeneus. Those have a greenish iridescens so I think it is not this one. But by all the dirt on the beetle everything is possible.
Regards of someone still thinking about a cow in a big white panty...
Klaas
