| | | Ichneumon wasp - species? I watched this Ichneumon wasp creep up on a caterpillar on the end of an oak branch. I have tried and failed to even assign this wasp to a family. I understand they are difficult to identify but can anyone get any closer than just Ichneumon wasp?

This is an Ichneumon Wasp as you say, and probably from the Anomalinae sub-family. As for species, it would require a specimen, microscope and a good knowledge-base of their morphology.
