Evening Paul,

It's Merodon equestris, otherwise known as the Narcissus Bulb-fly. This is in relation to the way the larvae burrow into daffodil bulbs and relatives.

A few invertebrates mimic various bees and wasps in an attempt to fool a potential predator into thinking it too poses a risk so it's left alone. Clever things, aren't they.

Thanks Jason. I was worried it might be a warble fly, which would have been unlikely given the rarity of cattle, horses and reindeer in North London (except at Christmas time, of course).
