Another snail ID

Hi Nige...good to see you taking an interest in Molluscs.

This snail is a juvenile, many can be problematic to id. However, seeing there is no umbilicus along with that colour...Cornu aspersum.

Thanks Chris yeah I'm finding a lot in my garden at the moment, especially after the rain

Nice to know someone can help me identify what I'm looking at and that it's not just 'a snail'

How many different species are there in the UK? Is there a good online guide somewhere to save me pestering you all the time?

Pester all you like Nige, no trouble at all

I'm not really sure actually how many land species there are in the UK. My land snails in the British Isles have it down as around 96 species, this excludes slugs (currently 36 species), hothouse and those that are thought to be extinct.

The Conchological society has a checklist, the first part of the list will be land molluscs with slugs included... Checklist of British and Irish non-marine Mollusca, 2005

Wiki also has a checklist... List of non-marine molluscs of Great Britain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Conchological society has a key for common garden molluscs... Conchological Society – Identifying species of garden molluscs found in Britain and Ireland
