Unidentified fly

Hello,

Can anyone tell me what sort of fly this is? Seen on a woodland ride in Hampshire.

I think it's a type of snipe fly
Rhagio sp.
Rhagio scolopaceus maybe...

That was very quick - I love this website! Great way to tap into the huge bank of individual knowledge out there and it's good to be able to tell my 3 year old what it is we've seen on our country walks.

I also think Rhagio scolopaceus but there is another very similar, Rhagio strigosus which to separate you need to see the side view of the thorax. In these pics it is reasonably visible but it would be better to see the whole side.

As the yellowish area on the side of the thorax appears to be a streak in the middle on the bioimages site that is not really visible on these pics.
