The colour of the shell can be very variable - from plain to fully striped.
The Dark Lipped Banded Snail ( Cepaea nemoralis) is a similar species it has a dark lip around the entrance to its shell.

EDIT: Just realised I had the dark lipped (also called Grove Snail???) in the garden the other day

| | | Re: Snail IDs, UK Hi faz, i can see where you are coming from, they can look like Cepaea (which as you have pointed out are very variable, as the link below will show for C. hortensis). However, the open umbilicus rules out Cepaea hortensis and C. nemoralis. http://delta-intkey.com/britmo/images/tayp0281.jpg
The first snail is Monacha cantiana. These are hairy when young, you can just make this out in the second photo.
The other snail looks to be Cernuella virgata, these can also be very variable in size and pattern.
