Can anyone identify these beetles. There were a number of them at the edge of a pond.  |

This is Agelastica alni. They live and develope on Alder, so there must be some close to the pond. In one or two weeks you will find the black larvae on the Alders.

Christian made an interresting remark if I'm sure about Agelastica alni, because this is a very rare species of the UK. I'm sorry, but I think he is right. At a second view it is "only" genus Altica that can only be exact identificated by dissection of the genitalia. The knowledge about the size of a beetle can help and would have done in this case.

Evening CB,
As Klaas says, Altica sp. - I've had Altica cf. lythri using secondary features, but I wasn't very happy with having to use them.
