| | | Hoverflies for ID please Hello
I was surrounded by hoverflies yesterday, didn't know where to point the camera Unfortunately a windy day so not so good photos. A few I think I know(?) but lots I don't So would appreciate ID's please.
1.
2. I think Episyrhus sp - Balteatus?
3 & 4 Very small sorry blurred, seem to have a swollen abdomen?
5 6 & 7 Are they the same? I kept seeing 2 lots of hoverflies which looked the same except that some were half the size of the others
8 - no idea
9 - No idea
Many thanks

| | | Re: Hoverflies for ID please I'm not an expert, just look at my other posts, but my twopenn'orth is:
2 6 and 7 are Episyrphus balteatus it's unique.
8 possibly Merodon equestris?
9 Neoascia sp - Male from the fat hind femur

Steve | I'd agree with you, Steve, on 2,5,6,7 being Episyrphus balteatus and 8 has a good chance of being Merodon equestris. Do you think 3 and 4 could be the same one you posted yourself today? 9 as you say could be a Neoscia sp, possibly N.podagrica?
Just a thought ... could 1 be a very dark E.balteatus? |

| | | Re: Hoverflies for ID please Thank you both, been looking up your suggestions, will label my pics for future reference. I think you're right about 3 & 4 being the same as Steve's thread - much better pics. Will wait with interest to find out what it is

| | | Re: Hoverflies for ID please #1 is Episyrphus balteatus, but it looks a bit strange on the tail end apart from being dark so it could be an 'intersex'.
I'm going to pass on 3&4, there isn't enough showing.
#8 is Merodon equestris.
#9 Syritta pipiens male.
The rest E. balteatus.
Janet

| | | Re: Hoverflies for ID please Afternoon Jane,
3-4 possibly show a Platycheirus such as P. albimanus, but as Janet says there isn't really enough.
Take care, Jason
